Everybody knows about Kevin Millar's karaoke rendition of "Born in the USA." Well, other Red Sox players are also into the music scene, particularly when it comes to their at-bat songs. (Uh, except for the guy who now plays shortstop in Chicago -- he requested silence.)
One of the most extreme cases of music's integral role happened in 2000, during a late-September game. With runners on first and second, Carlos Baerga was called upon to pinch hit. But before entering the on-deck circle, Baerga disappeared into the clubhouse. What he was doing was anyone's guess.
It turns out, Baerga was calling up to game operations to ensure Nelly's "Hot in Herre" was going to be played for his at bat. It was. And Baerga got back on the field just in time ... to get the final out and end both the inning and the rally.

Info from Twins: For years, Mientkiewicz rocked to the live version of Metallica's "For Whom the Bell Tolls," but he went into a prolonged slump this season and opted for a change. Looking for anything to change his luck, he invited the listeners to a local heavy metal radio station to help him choose some new tunes. They came up with Drowning Pool's "Step Up" and Pantera's "Walk." The tunes must have helped, because Doug hit .400 in the month of July. |
