Baylor trounces TCU to pick up 18th consecutive victory

Women's College Basketball, TCU Horned Frogs, Baylor Baylor

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Baylor was more than prepared for a TCU team with a new coach and a new philosophy.

The Horned Frogs still have some work to do to catch up -- and keep up -- with the Big 12's best team.

Nina Davis had 24 points and 11 rebounds, and Khaijiah Cave also scored almost at will inside for a career-high 21 points, and the third-ranked Lady Bears stretched their winning streak to 18 in a row with an 89-67 victory Tuesday night.

"They're trying to outscore you. It reminds me of the Loyola Marymount days," Baylor coach Kim Mulkey said. "I thought all along watching film that we'll run with you, we'll score with you. ... This was a game we prepared for hard. We prepare for all of them hard, but because of their style of play you want to make sure you've got everything covered."

The Lady Bears (19-1, 8-0 Big 12) dominated inside, outscoring TCU 60-24 in the paint. Davis was 12-of-17 shooting, all but one of Cave's 10 field goals were layups and Sune Agbuke, another post player, added 12 points.

Only No. 1 South Carolina (19-0) has a longer active winning streak. The Lady Bears had been matched with No. 19 Princeton (17-0) for the second-longest streak.

Cave had two layups in a 16-5 run in the first half with the Lady Bears took control. That nearly four-minute spurt, with Davis on the bench with two fouls, included two 3-pointers by Kristy Wallace, the second making it 42-30 with 3:48 left until halftime.

"Nina is an excellent player, but they've also got a lot of other players that make them work, and they aren't solely dependent on her," first-year TCU coach Raegan Pebley said. "When they make a substitution, it's more of handing off a baton in a 4-by-1 relay. There's not a big dip that happens."

Veja Hamilton had 15 points and Chelsea Prince 13 for TCU (12-7, 4-4). Klara Bradshaw had 10 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots.

But TCU leading scorer Zahna Medley finished with just six points, nearly 11 under her season average. She was just 1-of-11 shooting without a made 3-pointer.

"The job we did on Medley was important. The kid can shoot the 3-ball pretty effectively, and she didn't make one," Mulkey said. "That was a challenge for those guarding her. Don't let her have a 3. Let's see if we can be a team that can do that, and I thought we did that."

SMALL VENUE

TCU is playing its home games this season in the University Recreation Center, in a gym that seats much less than the announced attendance of 1,806 and included only 100 tickets for Baylor. The rec center is across the street from the campus arena that is undergoing a $59 million renovation. "Yeah, it reminded us of high school. The atmosphere, you can just hear everything," Agbuke said. "You can hear all the fans, but besides that, the competition was a little better than in high school." Mulkey said it might have been the most unique setting in which she has coached a game.

TIP-INS

Baylor: Lady Bears have outscored opponents in the paint 888-424 this season. ... The Lady Bears shot 53 percent from the field (38 of 72).

TCU: The Horned Frog never led and tied the game only twice, at 2-2 and 7-7. They appeared to be even at 22 when Donielle Breaux drove for a layup, but she was instead called for a charging foul drawn by Wallace. They missed a 3-pointer and layup on the same possession when down by 1, and TCU then went on its big run.
