BUFFALO, NY -- The University at Buffalo has signed men's basketball coach Reggie Witherspoon to a contract extension through the 2008-09 season. Witherspoon is entering his sixth season at Buffalo. Last season, when the Bulls went 17-12 overall and 11-7 in the MAC -- their most wins since joining the conference in 1998 -- Witherspoon was named as the league's coach of the year. "Reggie's efforts in elevating the profile of our men's basketball program
in Western New York and in the Mid-American Conference have been outstanding and I am pleased that we have been able to reach this agreement," interim athletics director Bill Maher said in a release Oct. 13. "The growth and interest in our program is a direct reflection of the work that Reggie, his staff and our student-athletes have put forth toward their goal of becoming Mid-American Conference Champions." "I am excited that the efforts that have been put into our program to become a competitive Mid-American Conference team have been acknowledged by the University with this commitment," Witherspoon said. "My focus continues to be on our young men and the development of our program. I am happy to be at UB during this exciting time for our men's basketball program." Witherspoon took over at Buffalo on an interim basis five games into the 1999-2000 season. He was hired as the full-time coach in 2000 and has an overall record at Buffalo of 41-97. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
