Stars place Modano on IR

DALLAS -- Mike Modano was put on injured reserve Thursday by the Dallas Stars and missed his fifth straight game because of a lower body injury.

The move was retroactive to Dec. 4, the night Modano suffered a hip flexor injury. The soonest he could return is Saturday at Los Angeles, but that is questionable.

The Stars recalled Joel Lundqvist from AHL Iowa. Lundqvist played in four games earlier this season for Dallas.

Modano got hurt in the second period of the Stars' 1-0 victory over San Jose after he scored the game's only goal on a one-timer during a power play in the first period. Modano has 10 goals and 10 assists in 27 games this season.

Modano's 495 career goals and 1,203 points are the second most for U.S.-born players. Joe Mullen had 502 goals and Phil Housley 1,232 points.

Lundqvist's return set up the opportunity for him to face his twin brother, Henrik Lundqvist, a goaltender for the New York Rangers, the Stars' opponent Thursday night. Only two other times in NHL history have twins opposed each other in a game.
