Low-key cap casualty day
Tightend at Tight End: The Broncos' releases of tight ends Wesley Duke and Landon Trusty in the past two days leave the team with only three tight ends on the roster. They are in good shape with Stephen Alexander and rookie Tony Schleffler as the top two tight ends. Nate Jackson, a converted receiver, is the third. Injuries led to releases of Duke and Trusty. Duke was a former basketball star trying to make it as the next Antonio Gates. The experiment apparently didn't work.
A Call To Arms: The Bills made a curious move in picking up Kliff Kingsbury on waivers from the Jets. They have Craig Nall, J.P. Losman and Kelly Holcomb in the only three-way competition in the league this summer. Kingsbery's chances of getting into the top three are doubtful, but the Bills needed a fourth arm for training camp.
Reception Problems: Even though Lions offensive coordinator Mike Martz had good things to say about receivers Mike Williams and Charles Rogers, what they did in the team's recent minicamp showed they are struggling. Williams missed Thursday and Friday in an excused absence. Though he's thinner and in better shape, Williams needs the time with the team if he's going to challenge for playing time. Rogers has been buried on the third team. The Lions appear to be ready to head to training camp with Roy Williams and Corey Bradford as the starting receivers. Who would have thought that Bradford would be a starter on a team that used three No. 1 picks at wide receiver between 2003 and 2005?
Let's Make A Deal: The Saints may be able to get some value for linebacker Courtney Watson, who reverted back to New Orleans after a trade with the Dolphins was voided because linebacker Eddie Moore didn't pass a physical because of a knee injury. Expect the Saints to make another pitch to the Dolphins for a trade for another player instead of putting Watson on waivers and having some team claim him.
Leading by Example: Brett Favre's presence at the Packers offseason training sessions is a good sign for the Packers. While some are focusing on the 12 players who weren't there because of scheduling problems, Favre promised head coach Mike McCarthy he would be at 10 of the 14 offseason sessions. He's fulfilling his obligation as a veteran and a leader, and that should help the Packers.
