Quietly, the Chiefs are doing a nice job of rebuilding against some tough odds. The Chiefs finished last season with an old roster. Entering training camp this year, about half of their starters were in their 30s. Tuesday's trade of Michael Bennett to Tampa Bay is another sign they are trying to get younger. The Chiefs kept seven draft choices of their own and picked up three more from other teams after the final cut.

With the addition of a sixth-round choice for Bennett, the Chiefs now have a league-high 11 picks in the 2008 draft. They will get only a fifth-round pick in the Trent Green trade because Green won't meet the 70-percent playing time trigger that would have made it a fourth-round choice. They picked up additional choices in trades involving kicker Lawrence Tynes, Dante Hall and Ryan Sims.

Bad leg holding back Darius: Safety Donovin Darius' leg problems are costing him a lot of great opportunities. He fought leg problems in Oakland and didn't make the team. He would have fit perfectly in a division that had TEs Tony Gonzalez and Antonio Gates. The Raiders had a nice three-safety package that would have worked if Darius was healthy. Unfortunately for them, he wasn't. Injuries have hurt the Dolphins at safety, so they brought in Darius. When they tried to get him on the field, his calf problems kept him out of games. At 0-6, the Dolphins have to look to the future. Darius didn't fit in there and was released Tuedsay.

Chargers feeling urgency: By trading for wide receiver Chris Chambers, the Chargers are indicating their time is now to win a championship. They have only four picks in next year's draft. Chambers cost them a second-rounder. Supplemental cornerback Paul Oliver cost them a fourth-rounder. They gave up a third-rounder in 2008 to move up in the 2007 draft to pick safety Eric Weddle in the second round. Built through strong drafts, the Chargers still have the youngest roster in the AFC West, so they didn't mind borrowing from the future to strengthen the present. The Chargers should get a third- or fourth-round compensatory pick for linebacker Donnie Edwards, who left for Kansas City. They could also get an additional seventh.

Tank must wait: It's starting to look like Tank Johnson won't get his league suspension dropped from eight to six games. Johnson has been hopeful, particularly when commissioner Roger Goodell cut him a big break by letting him train at the Cowboys' facility for the past two weeks. Johnson is trying to switch from the defensive tackle position in the 4-3 to nose tackle in the 3-4.

Niners strike out: The 49ers couldn't get trade value for two offensive linemen they will likely lose in free agency -- tackle Kwame Harris and guard Justin Smiley. The Redskins, despite their injuries along the offensive line, weren't interested enough in Harris to make a call even though Harris is a former first-round pick. The Redskins opted to sign two practice squaders and are hoping they can get by with the veterans they have. The asking price for Harris was reasonable. The 49ers wanted a fifth-rounder that would upgrade to a fourth if he was active for six games the rest of the season. It's not out of the question the 49ers could do even better on compensatory picks in 2009 if Harris and Smiley leave after the season.

Dolphins phasing out Green? Trent Green still wants to play, but that doesn't mean he will. It's probably only a couple of weeks before the Dolphins give rookie John Beck a chance to be the starting quarterback. Green doesn't figure to play in the next couple of weeks, and if injuries mount up, they might need a roster spot and be forced to put Green on injured reserve. Green is an optimistic person by nature, so it's not a surprise to see he's not ready to retire until he's forced to retire. Still, don't count on him playing much the rest of the season -- if at all.

Warner working his way back: Now that he knows for sure he's torn two ligaments in his left elbow, Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner can work on rehabbing and strengthening his left arm so he can handle snaps from center. He'll need some kind of a brace either for practices or games, but that won't affect his throwing. The Cardinals have a bye after this week's game against the Redskins. Warner will try to ready for the Nov. 4 game against Tampa Bay.

Fitting the Bills: The Bills' decision to go with Trent Edwards as the starting quarterback over J.P. Losman sounds like an organizational move to see if Edwards is the quarterback of the future. This doesn't bode well for the long-term future of Losman. The team can say it is concerned about Losman's knee, but Losman contends he's healthy. Edwards has done well filling in for him, but Losman probably gives the Bills the best chance to win because of his talent and experience. Though the move may not be for the rest of the season, it appears Losman might end up being the odd man out.
