Losman not one-week wonder

Don't think J.P. Losman's second chance of starting for the Bills at quarterback is going to be a one-week thing.

Dick Jauron named Losman the starter Tuesday when he found out Trent Edwards would miss a couple days of practice because of his sprained wrist. Though the assignment came with no promises, Losman now has a chance to win back the job he probably shouldn't have lost anyway.

Losman has a lot of support in the locker room and should get extra effort from teammates in Sunday's game against the Bengals. Organizationally, the Bills went down the Edwards path because he showed promise in winning two of three games as the starter.

Losman is the more experienced and, in many ways, the more talented quarterback. He's going to make it hard for Jauron to go back to Edwards.

Oakland loses DE: Raiders defensive end Tommy Kelly will undergo season-ending knee surgery Wednesday to repair a damaged ACL, and that's a big blow to the team.

He is a solid defensive end, and the Raiders have more plans for him in the future. Coach Lane Kiffin eventually wants him to move to defensive tackle and be a three-technique, eventually becoming the replacement for Warren Sapp.

The problem is the timing of the injury. Kelly is a free agent after the season. His goal is to rehab as hard as he can and show signs of progress by March when free agency starts in 2008. Other than the one ligament, Kelly didn't do any other damage.

WR Williams had chance: Kiffin gave former USC star Mike Williams more than enough chances to do well, but the wideout kept making more mistakes than plays in games.

After reaching a one-year agreement with veteran receiver Tim Dwight, the Raiders released Williams, the former No. 1 pick of the Lions. This might be it for Williams. He went to the Raiders thinking this might be his last chance. He carried more pounds than coaches wanted during his stays in Detroit and Oakland. He struggled to win much playing time. Kiffin was going to be more supportive of him because they were together at USC.

Raiders juggle roster: Once the Raiders put Kelly on injured reserve, they may hold the roster spot for running back Michael Bush. Bush broke his leg in Louisville and has been on the Raiders' physically unable to perform list. He's been slow in coming off the break, but the Raiders want to see if he has the potential to be a starter in the years ahead.

With Dominic Rhodes not fitting in so far, Bush could get some playing time in weeks ahead.

Grady lands: Grady Jackson's signing of a one-year deal with the Jaguars is an interesting one. Marcus Stroud has struggled this season coming off microfracture surgery of the ankle. He has not been as dominant this season after years of being one of the most dominating defensive tackles in the game. Teammate John Henderson also hasn't been dominating in recent weeks.

Jackson is a good fit in Jacksonville. Jack Del Rio knows what to do with big, hard-to-block defensive tackles. Jackson may be 370 pounds, but he can stop the run and get inside push on the pass rush when he wants to play.

Packers backers: Ryan Grant is now the Packers starter after they put DeShaun Wynn on the injured reserve because of a shoulder injury. The Packers personnel office liked Grant coming out of Notre Dame. They traded with the Giants to get him before the season because they wanted a bigger back who had "one-cut-and-go" ability.

Grant showed those skills rushing 104 yards against the Broncos Monday night. Bernard Jackson, the Packers second-round choice, was inactive even though he was healthy, meaning the Packers have given up nurturing him as the starter for the moment.

Robinson not ready: Mike McCarthy didn't activiate wide receiver Koren Robinson for the Monday night game because the Packers coach didn't think he was ready. After missing training camp and the first six weeks of the season as part of his one-year league suspension, Robinson is almost like a player in the first week of training camp.

McCarthy said Robinson has some knee inflammation that was slowing him down over the weekend. Rather than rush him through, McCarthy wanted to activate the veteran wide receiver when he was ready. Expect him to play this week.
