Parsed data says trust Spartans, but maybe not Ducks

As someone who likes his hoops stats processed a certain way, one of the few traditional metrics I can stomach is field goal percentage. I'm still a little stubborn in that area, though, in that I prefer to see effective field goal percentage. But even better, I'd rather see the separate 2-point and 3-point percentages, especially this time of year.

For one thing, there are more shots taken inside the arc, which gives us a bigger sample to examine, which is important to smooth out the hot and cold streaks that occur with every basketball variable. Even if the samples were the same size, though, 3-pointers are more prone to hot and cold streaks, anyway.

This can be taken one step further by invoking the constant battle between offense and defense. It seems like a hot 3-point shooting team can be immune to a good defense, to some extent. Likewise, a poor 3-point shooting is not helped so much by playing a poor perimeter defense.
