Chargers retain Feeley with two-year, $2 million deal

The Chargers have decided to keep A.J. Feeley, acquired in a trade with Miami last season, possibly as a backup quarterback.

San Diego restructured Feeley's contract on Wednesday, giving him a two-year, $2 million contract that included a $455,000 signing bonus. For Feeley, the deal offers him stability and a chance for him to work with offensive coordinator Cam Cameron for another season, with the outside chance of being the backup quarterback.

Feeley was the third quarterback for the Chargers behind Drew Brees and Philip Rivers last season. He was acquired by the Dolphins in 2004 in a trade from the Eagles but didn't win over new Dolphins coach Nick Saban. Saban went with Gus Frerotte and made Feeley available in a trade and eventually swapped him and his contract to the Chargers for quarterback Cleo Lemon.

Feeley was scheduled to make $3.5 million in 2005 under his old contract. He will make $1 million this year under his new deal.
