Neal, 35, signed a three-year extension worth $5.1 million, making him the highest-paid fullback in the league. Neal was scheduled to be a free agent after the 2007 season.

The combination of Neal and LaDainian Tomlinson is considered the best in football and Neal doesn't seem to be slowing down, even though he is entering his 15th season. He's considered a leader on the team and still considered one of the best blockers at his position.

The Chargers have locked up at least eight players since the conclusion of the 2006 season. The list includes cornerback Quentin Jammer, linebacker Matt Wilhelm, tackle Shane Olivea, kicker Nate Kaeding, center Nick Hardwick, wide receiver Eric Parker and linebacker Stephen Cooper.

Later Thursday, the team cleaned up its roster by releasing three veterans -- linebacker Steve Foley, wide receiver Keenan McCardell and tight end Aaron Shea. San Diego also decided not to tender a restricted free agent offer to tight end Ryan Krause. The Chargers also confirmed linebacker Donnie Edwards voided his contract and is now a free agent.
