NFL Nation: QB auditions highlight early camp storylines

NFL Nation reporters look ahead to Monday's practices at their team's training camp.

AFC EAST

Buffalo Bills: The Bills' quarterback rotation should result in EJ Manuel seeing 11-on-11 action with the first team during Monday evening's practice. Manuel has struggled more than Matt Cassel and Tyrod Taylor have through the first three days of training camp and needs to improve his accuracy. -- Mike Rodak

Miami Dolphins: The Dolphins have their first day off Monday. The team went full pads on back-to-back days and will resume practice Tuesday with an eye on the struggling offensive line, which is being manhandled by the defensive line so far in camp. -- James Walker

New England Patriots: The Patriots are coming off their first two padded practices, where there has been a heavy focus on the run game. LeGarrette Blount looks like the clear top "big" back at this point; can he continue to separate himself from Jonas Gray and Tyler Gaffney? -- Mike Reiss

New York Jets: After four days of practice, the Jets have a day off. When they return Tuesday, the burning question: Can quarterback Geno Smith keep alive his streak of no training-camp interceptions? -- Rich Cimini

AFC NORTH

Baltimore Ravens: The Ravens will have their only training camp practice of the year at M&T Bank Stadium on Monday night. It typically draws more than 20,000 fans and will feature fireworks following practice. -- Jamison Hensley

Cincinnati Bengals: Expect the physicality to ratchet up a notch in Bengals practice on Monday. Although players won't be tackled to the ground, there will be more contact both in the trenches and on passing routes downfield as the Bengals go in full pads for the first time. The battles between receivers and pressing corners will be most intriguing after they had good competition during the days when defenders weren't allowed to play tight coverage. -- Coley Harvey

Cleveland Browns: The Browns have their first day off in training camp, so there is no practice or player interviews. The Browns return for three days of work in Berea, Ohio, before heading to Columbus for an intrasquad scrimmage Friday night. -- Pat McManamon

Pittsburgh Steelers: The Steelers' revamped secondary will get much-needed 11-on-11 and red zone work against the loaded Pittsburgh offense. The Steelers need to continue building confidence in the secondary, particularly after the trade acquisition of Brandon Boykin, who was eased into action Sunday. Expect his workload to increase Monday. -- Jeremy Fowler

AFC SOUTH

Houston Texans: The Texans will have a full padded practice for the first time this summer on Monday night. Ryan Mallett and Brian Hoyer have shared time with the first-team offensive line and the first team receivers; their battle to be the Texans' starting quarterback is in its fourth quarter. -- Tania Ganguli

Indianapolis Colts: Continuity is the word coach Chuck Pagano is using in talking about an offensive line that started 11 different groups last season. The focus is on that group because the coach said their "goal is to find five starters as soon as possible." The Colts are looking for starters at left guard and center. Have to "start to develop the identity," Pagano said. -- Mike Wells

Jacksonville Jaguars: The Jaguars hit the road for a night practice at a local high school. It's part of the team's initiative to take the team into the community, and it goes along with their offseason caravans to different parts of the state. The most important thing is avoiding injuries, which they weren't able to do last season. They lost backup tight end Clay Harbor for all of camp and the first three games. -- Mike DiRocco

Tennessee Titans: A day after the Titans' first padded practice, they'll be on the field in the evening. Such sessions under the lights usually draw a nice crowd and may allow for cooler temperatures. After a long rest from Sunday morning's practice and with a day off looming, Ken Whisenhunt will expect a spirited, crisp outing from Marcus Mariota, who's protected the ball very well so far. -- Paul Kuharsky

AFC WEST

Denver Broncos: Quarterback Brock Osweiler has spent much of his three years in the NFL waiting for the kind of opportunity he'll get starting Monday. In an effort to keep Peyton Manning fresh late in the season, the Broncos are going to give Manning a day off now and then. Monday is expected to be the first of those days as Osweiler will run the team's No. 1 offense in what is expected to be the first fully padded practice of training camp. -- Jeff Legwold

Kansas City Chiefs: The Chiefs will hold their first practice in pads. That means the Chiefs can work on the running game and other physical aspects. "It'll be nice to get back into real football situations and all those little things,'' quarterback Alex Smith said. -- Adam Teicher

Oakland Raiders: The Raiders are looking to have a crisp morning padded practice as they quickly return from an Sunday evening workout, which was their first in pads. -- Bill Williamson

San Diego Chargers: Melvin Gordon missed his first practice of training camp on Sunday, watching practice from the sideline in a jersey and shorts. But head coach Mike McCoy would not tell reporters if the rookie running back suffered an injury or was given a rest day. If Gordon misses a second straight practice, it's likely the former. -- Eric D. Williams

NFC EAST

Dallas Cowboys: The Cowboys have their first off-day of training camp, which means Tony Romo will not work three straight days in camp in full pads until later in the week. Romo didn't work more than two straight days last year as he rested his surgically repaired back but will practice more this summer. With the Cowboys' next day off coming Friday, Romo should work Tuesday through Thursday. -- Todd Archer

New York Giants: The Giants have practiced for about an hour and 10 minutes each of the first three days of training camp. But with an off-day looming Tuesday, Tom Coughlin plans to stretch things out Monday afternoon and hold his longest practice of the camp so far. That could mean the latest test for receiver Victor Cruz, who has rotated in and out with the first team as he recovers from last year's significant knee injury and is having his workload built up slowly in the early going. -- Dan Graziano

Philadelphia Eagles: Every day of camp will be important for quarterback Sam Bradford, but Monday will be the first time he has to practice after going full speed through a full practice. How his surgically repaired knee responds will be something the Eagles and their fans are watching closely. -- Phil Sheridan

Washington Redskins: The Redskins will focus on their red zone offense, a major problem spot last season, for the second day in a row. But they won't limit their work to just that during 11-on-11s: They also will emphasize their two-minute attack. -- John Keim

NFC NORTH

Chicago Bears: The progress of first-round pick Kevin White will continue to be monitored as the rookie receiver recovers from a shin injury. John Fox said White is day-to-day but is improving. Alshon Jeffery, who's fighting a minor AC joint sprain, said he expects White to be back on the field before too long. -- Jeff Dickerson

Detroit Lions: The Lions open training camp Monday afternoon with a 3:30 p.m. ET workout at the team's practice facility in Allen Park, Michigan. The biggest thing for the Lions as they open camp is whether starting running back Joique Bell, who is on the physically unable to perform list, is healthy enough to start working out as the team tries to make the playoffs for the second straight season. -- Michael Rothstein

Green Bay Packers: Third-round pick Ty Montgomery was impressive in the first three days of practice, but as the receiver said, "They're not always going to line up rookie on rookie." Given what he's done so far, don't be surprised if he gets some work against the starters to see if he can continue to make plays. -- Rob Demovsky

Minnesota Vikings: The Vikings will practice on Monday with the start of their preseason schedule now less than a week away; the team will open the 2015 season against the Steelers in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET. Coach Mike Zimmer plans to keep mixing and matching players in practice to avoid getting too high on backups who might excel against second- and third-team competition in preseason games. -- Ben Goessling

NFC SOUTH

Atlanta Falcons: Starting right tackle Ryan Schraeder, who has been limited following a hamstring strain, said he expects to be back Monday. The Falcons need Schraeder and the rest of their projected starting offensive linemen healthy as they try to build chemistry in offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan's outside zone blocking scheme, which is aimed at establishing the running game while setting up play-action. -- Vaughn McClure

Carolina Panthers: Head coach Ron Rivera returns for the Panthers' 9:25 a.m. ET practice after spending the previous two days in Reno, Nevada, attending the funeral of his older brother. Mickey Rivera, 56, died Tuesday after a two-year bout with pancreatic cancer. -- David Newton

New Orleans Saints: First-round draft picks Andrus Peat and Stephone Anthony are scheduled to meet with the media for the first time Monday. Anthony, an inside linebacker, is off to a good start while working with the starters as an injury replacement. Peat has been going through more growing pains as the backup right tackle. -- Mike Triplett

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: The Buccaneers will have their first padded practice Monday. Coach Lovie Smith has said his staff won't begin evaluating linemen until they practice in pads. That makes this practice -- and sessions going forward -- especially important for rookies Donovan Smith and Ali Marpet because the Bucs are hoping they can be part of the starting line that protects quarterback Jameis Winston. -- Pat Yasinskas

NFC WEST

Arizona Cardinals: The Cardinals hold their first padded practice Monday. It'll be important to see how quarterback Carson Palmer, who's coming off an ACL injury, and the skill position players fare. -- Jose Romero

St. Louis Rams: The Rams will put on the pads for the first time for Monday's practice, a special-teams-only session set for the morning. It won't weigh heavily in terms of position battles but it's an important workout for players like rookie linebacker Bryce Hager, who must first prove worthy on special teams in order to make the roster. If tradition holds, it will also offer some big hits and perhaps even a few scuffles as the bottom part of the roster jockeys for spots. -- Nick Wagoner

San Francisco 49ers: The 49ers worked primarily in their base 3-4 defense in Saturday night's camp-opening practice and sprinkled in some nickel defense Sunday afternoon. It will be interesting to see how much of a combination the Niners will utilize Monday, especially in light of free-agent signee Darnell Dockett, who missed last season with a torn ACL. He has yet to practice but is being forecast as a pass-rush specialist at this time. -- Paul Gutierrez

Seattle Seahawks: After signing quarterback Russell Wilson on Friday and linebacker Bobby Wagner on Saturday, things may start returning to normal at Seahawks camp. Defensive tackle Tony McDaniel was cut to clear cap room and Ahtyba Rubin will be his replacement, which bears watching Monday and beyond. -- ESPN.com staff
