Giants acquire OF Alejandro De Aza from Red Sox

MLB, San Francisco Giants, Boston Red Sox

BOSTON -- David Dombrowski made his first trade as Red Sox president of baseball operations Monday night, sending outfielder Alejandro De Aza plus cash considerations to the San Francisco Giants for a Class A pitcher, Luis Ysla, who has been assigned to Class A Salem.

The club announced the deal about 40 minutes after Monday's midnight deadline for players traded to be eligible for postseason rosters.

The Giants have a need for an outfielder, with star outfielder Hunter Pence out with a strained left oblique.

As part of the deal, the Red Sox reportedly will send $650,000 to the Giants as payment toward the roughly $833,000 left on De Aza's $5 million contract.

This is the second consecutive season that De Aza has been involved in a waiver deadline deal.

Last Aug. 30, he was traded by the Chicago White Sox to Baltimore, where he performed ably, posting an .877 OPS in 20 games down the stretch and then batting .308 for the Orioles in their division series loss to the Royals.

De Aza was the Orioles' Opening Day left fielder this season, but he quickly tailed off, was designated for assignment by the Orioles and was acquired in early June by the Red Sox for a minor leaguer.

De Aza played well for the Red Sox, batting .292 with an .831 OPS in 60 games, but his playing time shrank after the Sox recalled Jackie Bradley Jr. and Rusney Castillo in late July.

He had gone 13 games without a start before starting Saturday and Sunday in Citi Field against the Mets. His ability to play all three outfield positions should also make him useful to the Giants.

Ysla, 23, is a Venezuelan who is in his third season with the Giants' organization.

He has struggled this season in the Class A California League, posting a 6.21 ERA with 95 strikeouts and 41 walks in 79 2/3 innings.
