Iowa suspends LB Reggie Spearman

Iowa linebacker Reggie Spearman will have a longer break from the field than anticipated. The Hawkeyes suspended their sophomore starter indefinitely during their bye week.

Spearman was cited early Saturday morning for an alcohol-related offense. The team released a statement Saturday afternoon saying Spearman will miss at least one game and may face other consequences once more facts about his incident come out.

"I was disappointed to hear of the charges against Reggie," coack Kirk Ferentz said in the statement. "... Reggie will go through the UI student-athlete code of conduct process and we will move forward from there."

Spearman, a Chicago native, has started all seven games for Iowa's defense this season and has 34 tackles and one sack. He had 10 tackles in 10 games as a freshman.

Iowa (5-2) plays Northwestern next weekend before traveling to face Minnesota in a game that could have implications for the Big Ten West Division race.
