Will Gardner finished for season

Louisville starting quarterback Will Gardner will miss the rest of the season because of a left knee injury that will require surgery, the school announced Tuesday.

Gardner, a redshirt sophomore, suffered the injury in the Cardinals' 38-19 win Saturday at Boston College.

"It is really unfortunate and disappointing for Will because of how hard he has worked and how respected he is in the locker room," coach Bobby Petrino said in a release. "Will will continue to be an integral part of our program moving forward because of his leadership he has displayed and the respect he has in the locker room."

Gardner has torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his other knee twice before, but rebounded this year to replace first-round NFL draft pick Teddy Bridgewater and help lead Louisville to a 7-3 record, including a 5-3 mark in ACC play, the program's first year in the league.

Louisville has a bye this week before traveling to Notre Dame and hosting rival Kentucky.

Gardner was 5-2 as a starter this season, completing better than 57 percent of his passes for 1,669 yards and 12 touchdowns with three interceptions.

Reggie Bonnafon is expected to assume the starting role. The true freshman has seen extended action this season, competing better than 55 percent of his passes for 662 yards and four touchdowns with one interception.
