Two Volunteers accused of rape

Tennessee leading tackler A.J. Johnson is one of two players on the team accused of raping a female student at the university, according to a report released Tuesday by the Knoxville Police Department.

The 19-year-old woman, who is a student at Tennessee, told police that Johnson and cornerback Michael Willams raped her early Sunday morning at an off-campus apartment and that the attack lasted about 45 minutes. Police are continuing to investigate and no charges have been filed.

Williams also has been accused of sexual assault by a second 19-year-old woman at the same off-campus apartment, but the woman told police she did not want to press charges.

According to the police report, the Tennessee student who said she was raped received medical treatment. The other woman, who attends college in Florida, did not receive treatment and returned home.

On Monday afternoon, Tennessee announced that both Johnson and Williams had been suspended from all team activities.

"I am aware of the alleged incident that occurred over this weekend,'' Volunteers coach Butch Jones said at his Monday news conference. "Right now we are in the process of gathering all the information. Once we have that appropriate information we will act in a very decisive manner, which we have proven over time to do here at the University of Tennessee.''

Jones said at that time he wanted to be "right rather than fast" when making his decision. Tennessee did not say what had changed or new information had been gathered between the coach's news conference and the players' suspensions about four hours later.

Once Knoxville police complete their investigation, they will turn over their findings to the Knox County district attorney, who will decide if charges will be filed.

The two women contacted police around 3 a.m. Sunday and then met with investigators. Police conducted a search of the apartment where the alleged assaults occurred.

Johnson was a first-team All-SEC selection last season and ranks second all time on Tennessee's career tackles list with 425. He has 101 tackles this season, which ranks second in the SEC. Williams has started five games this season at cornerback.
