Sun Belt fills bowl slots

Arkansas State will play in the GoDaddy Bowl for the fourth consecutive year, officials announced Wednesday.

The game will be held Jan. 4.

Louisiana-Lafayette and South Alabama will receive the Sun Belt's two other bowl berths, sources told ESPN earlier Wednesday.

UL-Lafayette will go to the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl, and South Alabama to the Raycom Media Camellia Bowl, sources said.

Georgia Southern won the Sun Belt and Appalachian State finished third, but both schools were not bowl eligible because they were in the transition phase from FCS to FBS. UL-Lafayette (8-4, 7-1 Sun Belt) finished second in the league. South Alabama (6-6, 5-3), Arkansas State (7-5, 5-3) and Texas State (7-5, 5-3) finished in a three-way tie for fourth.

Since Texas State didn't receive a berth from one of the Sun Belt's bowls, the school will have to get an at-large bid from a non-Sun Belt bowl, and that is unlikely.

Because Sun Belt champion Georgia Southern was not bowl eligible, the conference was allowed to select its teams before Sunday. On Sunday, the matchups for the remaining 35 bowls will be announced.

The Sun Belt's opponents will be a Mountain West Conference team in the New Orleans Bowl (Dec. 20 at 11 a.m. ET); Mid-American Conference team in the Camellia Bowl (Dec. 20, 9:15 p.m.) and a MAC team in the GoDaddy Bowl (Jan. 4, 9 p.m.).
