UK hires Shannon Dawson as O-boss

Kentucky will hire West Virginia's Shannon Dawson as its new offensive coordinator, a source told ESPN.com on Wednesday night.

Dawson had been an assistant coach at West Virginia since 2011 and served as the Mountaineers' offensive coordinator the past three seasons.

The news was earlier reported by FootballScoop.com.

West Virginia averaged 5.91 yards per play in 2014, tied for 47th in the FBS.

At times during Dawson's three-year run as coordinator, head coach Dana Holgorsen shared the playcalling duties with Dawson.

Given Kentucky coach Mark Stoops' background as a defensive coach, the source said the move is an opportunity for Dawson to branch out and run his own offense.

The position at Kentucky opened when Neal Brown left to become Troy's head coach.

The Wildcats started 5-1 in 2014 but dropped their final six games to just miss out on a bowl in Stoops' second season.
