How did we rank the players?
We asked 32 of ESPN's college football writers and editors to rate players on a scale of 0-10 based on their performance during the 2014 season.
T-61. S Cody Prewitt, Ole Miss Rebels
Score: 7.06
A year after becoming the first Ole Miss safety in 40 years to become a first-team All-American, Prewitt earned several more All-America nods in 2014. He picked off three passes and ranked fifth on the team with 64 tackles as one of the leaders of Ole Miss' feisty defense.
T-61. QB Blake Sims, Alabama Crimson Tide
Score: 7.06
Few expected Sims to win Alabama's starting quarterback job, but not only did he do that, he became one of the country's most efficient passers. Sims' 85.8 Total QBR this season trailed only Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota (90.8) as he helped the Crimson Tide win the SEC in his lone season as starter.
T-63. WR Tyler Boyd, Pittsburgh Panthers
Score: 7.03
Boyd built off his astounding freshman campaign by grabbing 78 passes for 1,261 yards and eight touchdowns, while proving to be a multipurpose threat as a rusher, return man and, yes, even a passer. (He completed his only attempt, for 29 yards.) He was a first-team All-ACC selection and is now fourth on the school's all-time receptions list (163), ahead of Larry Fitzgerald.
T-63. LB Paul Dawson, TCU Horned Frogs
Score: 7.03
The All-American linebacker did it all for the Horned Frogs. He stepped up in huge games and his production was ridiculous: 136 tackles, 20 TFLs, six sacks and four interceptions, including the pick-six to clinch an upset win over Oklahoma.
T-63. DE Randy Gregory, Nebraska Cornhuskers
Score: 7.03
Gregory's breakout sophomore year made stopping him a priority for opposing offenses as a junior and, as a result, sacks were harder to come by this season. The second-team All-American end finished the year with seven sacks and 10 tackles for loss, but his speed and size opened up opportunities for other members of the Cornhuskers defensive front.
T-63. RB Todd Gurley, Georgia Bulldogs
Score: 7.03
Georgia fans will forever wonder what might have been in 2014 with Gurley, who was the Heisman Trophy front-runner before a midseason suspension for selling autographed memorabilia. Gurley tore his ACL in his first game back from suspension, but still finished with 911 rushing yards in just six games.
T-63. WR Laquon Treadwell, Ole Miss Rebels
Score: 7.03
Perhaps the turning point in Ole Miss' season came when Treadwell suffered a gruesome leg injury just before scoring the potential game-winning touchdown against Auburn. The Rebels' offense wasn't the same after losing its most dangerous receiver, who still led the team with 48 receptions in just nine games.
T-68. RB Duke Johnson, Miami (FL) Hurricanes
Score: 7.00
The All-ACC running back finished seventh in the nation in all-purpose yards with 2,073 and topped 1,000 yards rushing for the first time in his career. He ran for 80 or more yards in every game this season, with seven 100-yard games. Johnson leaves Miami as the school's all-time leader in rushing yards (3,519), all-purpose yards (5,526) and yards per carry (6.69).
T-68. DE Shawn Oakman, Baylor Bears
Score: 7.00
Good luck blocking a dude this big. The freaky 6-foot-9, 280-pound defensive end emerged as one of the premier pass-rushers in the nation, producing 11 sacks and 19.5 tackles for loss as a junior.
T-68. TE Maxx Williams, Minnesota Golden Gophers
Score: 7.00
Williams' best catch at Minnesota was one of his last. His double-hurdle, 54-yard touchdown against Missouri in the Citrus Bowl will probably help the redshirt sophomore's draft status. He was the Gophers' most consistent option in the passing game and finished the year with 36 catches and eight touchdowns.
