Michael Cummings needs surgery, out indefinitely after spring game hit

Kansas senior quarterback Michael Cummings will require surgery after injuring his knee during the Jayhawks' spring game Saturday. It is unknown at this point how long he will be out.

Cummings was wearing a no-contact jersey when cornerback Michael Glatczak crashed into his knee while making a tackle. Kansas first-year coach David Beaty said he reviewed the film and that Glatczak's tackle on Cummings was not deliberate.

"It was a complete freak accident," Beaty said in a statement. "Michael Glatczak was being blocked down the field and had his back to the action for almost the entire play. At the last second he turned to make the tackle without having any idea who was carrying the ball. He is a great kid, a great teammate, and again it was just a very unfortunate accident."

Cummings started Kansas' final seven games last season in place of Montell Cozart and finished with nine touchdown passes and six interceptions. Until Cummings returns, Cozart will likely step back into a starting role.

Cummings' injury wasn't the only blow to the Kansas offense over the weekend. After the spring game, Beaty announced that running back Corey Avery and receiver Rodriguez Coleman had been suspended indefinitely, terming their futures with the team as "uncertain."

Avery led the Jayhawks in rushing as a true freshman last season with 631 yards and five touchdowns. Coleman was Kansas' leading returning receiver.
