The wait for a definitive winner in Michigan's quarterback battle will stretch on for a few more days.
Michigan released a depth chart Monday evening for its season opener at Utah, with the Wolverines listing their starting quarterback as fifth-year senior Jake Rudock or junior Shane Morris. When asked about the impending decision last Thursday, head coach Jim Harbaugh said he would provide an update on his starting lineup when Utah shared its depth chart.
"I was informed that our competition for Thursday night's ballgame, Utah, would be sending us their official depth chart Monday," Harbaugh said. "In the interest of fair and healthy competition, we will also send our official depth chart on Monday as well."
Harbaugh has refrained from naming starters at any position during the team's closed-door training camp in hopes of keeping a competitive atmosphere, but players say the offense's next leader has been evident for the past week based on the amount of reps each quarterback is taking.
"Going into it, at this point in camp we know who the starters are going to be," said right guard Kyle Kalis, who declined to name any names. "We know the deal pretty much. Wait for Coach, but you guys probably know."
Rudock, a graduate transfer from Iowa, completed 60.3 percent of his passes in 25 games leading the Hawkeyes' offense. Among FBS quarterbacks who threw at least 300 passes last year, only Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota, USC's Cody Kessler and Washington's Cyler Miles threw fewer interceptions than Rudock, who had five.
He was criticized for being too conservative at Iowa and lost his starting job before the team's 2014 bowl game. He arrived in Ann Arbor in June, and teammates say he has since settled into a leadership role with the team.
"He's done a great job," senior wide receiver Jehu Chesson said. "It seems like yesterday he just came on campus, but he's embraced everything. He's not a guy who complains. He doesn't hang his head low. Guys are excited to follow him because he does things right."
Morris started two games in his first two seasons at Michigan. He completed 14 passes and threw three interceptions of 40 attempts as a sophomore in 2014. Offensive coordinator Tim Drevno praised Morris last week for making big strides in his command of the offense during August's training camp.
The depth chart listed junior De'Veon Smith as the team's starting tailback, another contested position in camp. Juniors Derrick Green and Ty Isaac are also expected to contribute at that spot.
Michigan opens its season Thursday night at Utah.
