Florida QB Treon Harris gets starting nod vs. New Mexico State

The Florida Gators will start Treon Harris at quarterback in Saturday's opener versus New Mexico State over redshirt freshman Will Grier, coach Jim McElwain said Tuesday.

McElwain had made it clear last week that both would play against the Aggies.

Harris started the final six games of 2014, completing 49.5 percent of his passes for 1,019 yards, nine touchdowns and four interceptions while rushing for 338 yards and three touchdowns.

Grier redshirted but was the Parade National Player of the Year in his senior year of high school and ranked as the No. 3 quarterback in the 2014 recruiting class.

Both have been competing for the starting quarterback job throughout the offseason.

McElwain reiterated Tuesday that both quarterbacks will play Saturday but that Harris will get the first opportunity.

McElwain said Harris has become more comfortable with what the coaches are asking him to do.
