Volunteers dismiss WR Alton 'Pig' Howard for rules violation

College Football, Tennessee Volunteers, Georgia Bulldogs

Tennessee senior wide receiver Alton "Pig" Howard has been dismissed from the team for a violation of team rules, coach Butch Jones announced Wednesday.

Howard was suspended for Tennessee's opener against Bowling Green for a violation of team rules and has played in two games this season because of an ankle injury and concussion-like symptoms. He had just one catch for 8 yards after leading the team in receiving last season.

"You try to impact every person that comes in your program," Jones said. "It's all about choices and decisions. It's unfortunate, but we have to continue to move forward."

Jones said Howard's dismissal was not injury-related.

Howard had 54 catches for 618 yards and a touchdown in 2014. He finishes his career with 112 receptions, which ties him with Denarius Moore for 12th all-time at Tennessee. He also had 1,068 receiving yards and five touchdowns in his career.

"He was definitely a big part of our team," senior safety Brian Randolph said of Howard. "It's very unfortunate [that Howard was dismissed], but this is a big week for us and we have all of our attention on Georgia."

Tennessee (2-3, 0-2 SEC), which has lost two straight, hosts No. 19 Georgia (4-1, 2-1) at 3:30 p.m. ET Saturday. Georgia has won its past five games over the Vols, but the most recent four have all been decided by eight points or fewer.
