Cal's win over Grambling State counts toward bowl eligibility

College Football, California Golden Bears

Cal's win over Grambling State in its season opener will count toward bowl eligibility, a school spokesman confirmed Wednesday.

Concerns surfaced Tuesday that Grambling State, an FCS school, might not meet scholarship requirements, prompting Cal (6-5) to file a waiver to the NCAA as a backup.

FCS schools are allowed to give 63 scholarships and must meet at least 90 percent of that during a rolling two-year period in order to count as a win for FBS teams looking to reach the six-win standard for bowl eligibility.

Wes Mallette, Cal's associate athletic director of strategic communications, confirmed that Grambling did meet the 90 percent threshold and released a statement on behalf of the university.

"We have conferred with both Grambling and the NCAA," he said. "As anticipated, Grambling has confirmed their football program has met the 90 percent financial aid requirement over the rolling two-year average. Therefore, Cal football's win over Grambling counts toward bowl eligibility. Cal football is bowl eligible."

The Bears are bowl-eligible for the first time since 2011. Cal defeated Grambling 73-14 on Sept. 5 and won its sixth game against Oregon StateĀ earlier this month.

The Bears host Arizona State (6-5) on Saturday in the season finale.
