Utah extends Kyle Whittingham's contract through 2020 season

College Football, Utah Utes

Utah Utes football coach Kyle Whittingham has agreed to an extension through the 2020 season that will pay him $3.3 million a year.

"I am grateful for the support and commitment shown by [athletic director] Chris Hill and President [David] Pershing with this contract extension," Whittingham said in a news release. "It gives further stability to our football program and what we are trying to accomplish."

In his 11 seasons at the helm of the Utes' program, Whittingham has acquired a 95-46 record. Utah is coming off its most successful season in the Pac-12, finishing with a 10-3 record that included back-to-back wins over then-No. 13 Oregon and then-No. 23 Cal. The Utes were ranked as high as No. 3 in the AP poll and finished the year at No. 17 after a Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl win over rival BYU.

Whittingham's bowl record is 9-1, and that .900 winning percentage ranks first among coaches who have made it to at least 10 bowls, besting Urban Meyer (8-2, .800), Tom O'Brien (8-2, .800) and Pat Dye (9-3, .750).
