A.J. Reed wins Golden Spikes

Pitcher/infielder A.J. Reed of Kentucky won the Golden Spikes Award as the top amateur baseball player in the U.S., becoming just the third two-way player to receive the honor.

Reed's selection was made Thursday on ESPN's "SportsCenter."

Oregon State outfielder Michael Conforto and LSU pitcher Aaron Nola were the other finalists for the award.

Reed was 12-2 with a 2.09 ERA in 112 innings for Kentucky. He is the first Golden Spikes Award winner in the Wildcats' history and was a consensus first-team All-American in 2014. At the plate he led the nation with 23 home runs.

He was a second-round pick of the Houston Astros in Major League Baseball's first-year player draft in June.
