Sources: Coastal Carolina to Sun Belt

Coastal Carolina will join the Sun Belt Conference beginning in the 2016-17 academic year, sources told ESPN on Monday.

Coastal Carolina will join the Sun Belt in all sports but football in 2016-17. The Chanticleers will remain at the FCS level in football in 2016 before joining the Sun Belt as a football member for the 2017-18 academic year.

A news conference is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET Tuesday, an industry source said.

Sun Belt presidents voted Sunday to add Coastal Carolina over Eastern Kentucky, sources said.

Sun Belt commissioner Karl Benson declined to comment when contacted by ESPN.

The addition of Coastal will give the Sun Belt 12 football members in 2017, including football-only members Idaho and New Mexico State. It also will give the league 12 members in basketball; Arkansas Little Rock and Texas-Arlington don't have football programs.

Located in Conway, South Carolina, the Chanticleers didn't begin football until 2003 and are currently an FCS program.

However, Benson had previously said adding a 12th school would allow for not only football divisions and a conference title, it also would allow the Sun Belt to create divisions in the league's Olympic sports, including men's and women's basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball and women's soccer.
