Roundball chatter

Men's College Basketball, Florida Gators, Florida State Seminoles, Mississippi State Bulldogs, Loyola (Il) Ramblers

Each week, I write about the sport I love, college basketball:

• Florida suffered a setback, as starting forward Chris Walker will miss the team's first two games of the regular season against William & Mary and Miami, plus the team's exhibition game, because of an unspecified violation of team rules. Also sidelined is freshman guard Brandone Francis, who will miss the entire 2014-15 season because of academic issues.

• Let's start the countdown. Mike Krzyzewski needs 17 wins to get to the magical 1,000 mark for his illustrious career. I know the ACC will be tough, but I think he will get there this season.

• Wishing SEC commissioner Mike Slive all the best in the future. Unfortunately, he is in another battle with prostate cancer and will retire from his role as commissioner in 2015.

• Keep an eye on Aaron Thomas of Florida State. Coach Leonard Hamilton told me he is going to be the real deal this season, as Seminoles fans will have a reason to smile.

• Mississippi State went 14-19 last season, and the start of this campaign has already been marred. Craig Sword, the team's leading scorer last season (13.7 PPG), will miss the start of the season after recent surgery on a bulging disk in his back.

• Loyola-Chicago suffered a major blow when guard Milton Doyle, the team's top returning scorer, suffered a major shoulder injury. He averaged almost 15 PPG last season.
