Roundball chatter

Each week, I'll write about the sport I love: college basketball.

• I love the fact that Kentucky plays a challenging group of nonconference opponents. In the upcoming season, the list includes Duke, Kansas, Louisville, UCLA, Arizona State and Ohio State. There is also a game against South Florida, coached by former Wildcat assistant Orlando Antigua. Give John Calipari credit for putting his kids in against solid competition; it will help in the long run.

• Louisiana Tech named former Miami assistant Eric Konkol as its 18th head coach in program history. He took over for Mike White, who left for Florida to be Billy Donovan's replacement.

• Congratulations to a class act, Georgia coach Mark Fox. He was given a five-year deal by Georgia. Despite injuries, the Bulldogs went 21-12 last season and made the NCAA tournament.

• Helping pay tribute to the almost 2,400 lives lost during the sudden attack of United States military installations on the Hawaiian Islands on Dec. 7, 1941, Oklahoma will play Villanova on the 74th anniversary, this Dec. 7 on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam near Honolulu.

• I like what the Sun Belt decided to do to ensure strength of schedule is a positive factor. The league put in place a rule that states if any school opts to schedule more than two games against non-Division I opponents, they will face a $50,000 fine.

• St. John's continues to build under new coach Chris Mullin. Guard Marcus LoVett Jr., from the Chicago area, signed with the Red Storm last week.
