Roundball chatter

Men's College Basketball, Virginia Cavaliers

Each week, I'll write about the sport I love: college basketball.

• It was a big win for Virginia and coach Tony Bennett to sign former Memphis Tiger Austin Nichols over stiff competition. Nichols will sit the upcoming season, but he will be a major factor in 2016-17.

• I have said it many times: Players who make bad decisions face consequences. Anton Beard of Arkansas and two of his teammates were suspended on forgery charges. They are alleged to have used counterfeit bills.

• Congratulations to Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis, who will take over the NCAA tournament selection committee chair from Joe Castiglione in 2017.

• Giving the selection committee more flexibility is a positive. I wish it would re-seed the Final Four teams.

• On a team that included college stars Denzel Valentine, Ron Baker, Malcolm Brogdon and Kaleb Tarczewski, 30-year-old Bobby Brown was the high scorer at more than 17 points per game for Team USA in the Pan American games. The Americans settled for the bronze medal.

•Alabama will face Oregon at Legacy Arena in Birmingham on Dec. 21. It will mark the Crimson Tide's first appearance in Birmingham since facing Oklahoma State in 2011.
