LOS ANGELES -- Dodgers catcher Yasmani Grandal left Friday night's 2-1 win against the San Diego Padres after being struck in the mask with both a bat and a foul ball.
Grandal was struck twice, first in the side of the head by Yangervis Solarte's backswing to end the Padres' half of the third inning and then by a Matt Kemp foul ball off the mask in the top of the fourth inning. Grandal flew out to deep center field to end the fourth inning and then was attended to in the dugout by head trainer Stan Conte and manager Don Mattingly. Grandal was given concussion tests before he was removed from the game at Conte's urging and replaced by A.J. Ellis.
Mattingly said Grandal will not start Saturday's game, but he was scheduled to have the game off anyway. The team pulled Triple-A catcher Austin Barnes from a game at Las Vegas as a precaution in case it puts Grandal on the seven-day concussion list.
Grandal was driven home from the stadium by his wife shortly after the game ended.
"They'll assess him tomorrow and see where we're at," Mattingly said.
Grandal has been the slumping Dodgers' hottest hitter. Entering the game, he was batting .396 in May, tied with Milwaukee's Gerardo Parra for the best average in the National League this month. The Dodgers entered Friday's game having not scored since the fourth inning of their game against the Colorado Rockies on Sunday. They were shut out in all three games this week at San Francisco's AT&T Park.
