The College of Charleston has hired Clemson assistant coach Earl Grant after an exhaustive, nearly month-long search for a replacement for the fired Doug Wojcik.

The school made the official announcement on Tuesday night.

"I believe the College of Charleston has a boundless opportunity with Coach Earl Grant, and I am confident he will help launch a new beginning full of excellence, teamwork and success," school president Glenn McConnell said. "Earl inherits a team that has bonded together during the past months and has shown character, fortitude and leadership. I am very proud of how this team has stood up to adversity."

Wojcik was fired on Aug. 5 after allegations were made that he was verbally abusive to players during his two years at the school.

Charleston brought in both Grant and N.C. State assistant Bobby Lutz over the last couple days for follow-up interviews. Virginia assistant Ritchie McKay withdrew on Sunday, and Wofford coach Mike Young -- once considered the co-favorite, along with former College of Charleston player Anthony Johnson -- bailed a week ago after the process dragged on.

The College of Charleston also interviewed UConn assistant coach Karl Hobbs.

Grant has been an assistant at Clemson for Brad Brownell the past five seasons. He was an assistant under Gregg Marshall for three years at Wichita State and also three at Winthrop. Grant was an assistant at the Citadel -- located in Charleston -- from 2002 to 2004.

Grant continues a line of Brownell assistant coaches who have landed head coaching jobs. Brownell's one-time assistant Billy Donlon replaced him at Wright State, while his Clemson assistant Rick Ray landed the head coaching job at Mississippi State.

Grant, who went to nearby Stall High School, will be formally introduced on Friday.
