Charles Mitchell granted waiver

Charles Mitchell isn't leaving the ACC after departing Maryland following the season.

Mitchell was granted immediate eligibility Friday to play this season at Georgia Tech.

The 6-foot-8 Mitchell, a native of Marietta, Georgia, was granted the waiver to be closer to his family. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution had reported earlier in the summer he wanted to be near his ailing grandmother.

Mitchell will be an immediate factor inside for the Yellow Jackets with 6-8 Ole Miss transfer DeMarco Cox, who also won a waiver to play this season after graduating under a transfer rule.

Mitchell averaged 6.5 points and 6.3 rebounds in 18.8 minutes per game as a sophomore for the Terrapins, now members of the Big Ten. He will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Maryland picked up a Georgia Tech transfer in an odd twist earlier in the summer when Robert Carter Jr. landed with the Terps.

Georgia Tech finished 16-17 overall last season, 6-12 in the ACC.

Yellow Jackets coach Brian Gregory said last week his team will lean on Marcus Georges-Hunt as its top scorer, but desperately needed to shore up a limited frontcourt. Gregory also made a staff hire Friday, taking on former Marshall coach Tom Herrion as an assistant.
