Alex Murphy debuts for Florida

Former Duke forward Alex Murphy made his debut for Florida on Saturday after transferring last year.

Murphy received his grades for the fall semester, making him eligible. He scored nine points in the Gators' 63-50 win against Wake Forest (5-5) on Saturday in the Orange Bowl Classic.

A 6-foot-8 junior from Wakefield, Rhode Island, Murphy is the younger brother of former Florida starter Erik Murphy. Alex Murphy averaged 1.9 points in 36 games with the Blue Devils. He left Duke after five games last fall and landed at Florida, where he's expected to be a role player off the bench for coach Billy Donovan.

While Florida got Murphy back, the Demon Deacons were short-handed as freshman guard Mitchell Wilbekin sat out Saturday's game due to suspension.

Wilbekin has been suspended for up to six games due to an NCAA violation, the school announced Saturday, but plans to appeal the penalty.

Wake Forest also was without freshmen Cornelius Hudson and Rondale Watson for conduct detrimental to the team.
