K-State dismisses Marcus Foster

Men's College Basketball, Kansas St Wildcats

Kansas State sophomore star Marcus Foster has been dismissed from the program, the school announced Tuesday night.

Foster, a member of the preseason all-Big 12 first team and an all-Big 12 honorable mention in 2014-15, was suspended three games in February for violating team rules. His minutes, points, assists, 3-point and overall field goal percentages were all down this season compared to last year. He averaged 12.5 points per game for Kansas State this season.

Foster overcame the odds after failing to attract many Division I offers out of high school. The Wichita Falls, Texas, native wasn't even a top-10 prospect in his own state.

Now, Foster only has a handful of options if he intends to continue his career. He can transfer to another school and sit for a year -- the NCAA recently eliminated hardship waivers that have allowed some transfers to play immediately. Or he can turn to a junior college and then return to a high major program after a stint there.

Tony Johnson, who coached Foster at the AAU level, said he was stunned by the news when reached by ESPN.com on Tuesday night.

"I don't know what's going on," said Johnson, who runs the Dallas Mustangs. "I'm shocked. He's a great kid. A 'yes sir, no sir' kid."

Freshman Tre Harris (3.8 points per game) has also been dismissed by the Wildcats and Jevon Thomas (4.5 points per game) has decided to transfer to a school closer to home, per Kansas State's release.

"Marcus and Tre have been unable to live up to the standards that we expect of our players," coach Bruce Weber said in a release. "It is a privilege to represent Kansas State University and there are consequences when players don't live up to those expectations. Hopefully, they will learn from this experience and make the necessary progress to continue their basketball careers elsewhere."
