Nebraska's Pitchford skips final year

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Walter Pitchford says he's giving up his final season of eligibility at Nebraska to concentrate on finishing his degree.

Pitchford, who announced his decision Monday, started 26 games this past season and averaged 7.2 points and 4.7 rebounds. He scored in double digits nine times, including a career-high 19 points against Tennessee-Martin and at Maryland.

The 6-foot-10 forward in 2014 helped lead the Cornhuskers to their first NCAA tournament appearance since 1998. He averaged 9.3 points, and his 41 percent shooting on 3-pointers ranked seventh in the Big Ten.

Pitchford played his freshman season at Florida. The native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, said he plans to start a career in business after he finishes his degree in ethnic studies.
