Torin Dorn joins NC State

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Conference USA Freshman of the Year Torin Dorn is headed to NC State.

Dorn spent last season at Charlotte and was the 49ers' leading scorer, but he decided to transfer after a coaching change. He said he chose the Wolfpack because of a desire to stay in his home state and due to coach Mark Gottfried's successful history with transfers.

"I liked the plan Coach Gottfried laid out for me in terms of my development and my role in the program going forward," Dorn said.

Gottfried has used transfers since arriving at NC State before the 2011-12 season. He added a valuable rotation guard in graduate transfer Alex Johnson from Cal State Bakersfield that season. He then found a two-year backcourt starter in LSU transfer Ralston Turner followed by an all-ACC performer in combo guard Trevor Lacey from Alabama last season.

West Virginia transfer Terry Henderson sat out last season but will be eligible in 2015-16 to take Turner's spot.

Dorn, whose father played football at rival North Carolina and in the NFL, averaged 12 points per game last year. The 6-foot-5 native of Charlotte must sit out this season but will have three years of eligibility remaining.

He plans to improve his ballhandling so he can play both guard positions.

"I'll just approach it as a year to get better, become more mature and improve my weaknesses," Dorn said. "I have a detailed plan of what I want to improve, and it's just attack that every day and compete every day against ACC talent. When the year's up, I'll be ready to play."

He said he also considered Miami before informing Wolfpack coaches of his decision Sunday.
