Andrew White III to transfer from Nebraska

Andrew White III is leaving the Nebraska men's basketball team and will play elsewhere for his final college season.

Cornhuskers coach Tim Miles confirmed to the Lincoln Journal Star that White asked Nebraska athletic director Shawn Eichorst for his release Saturday.

"I spoke with Andrew late last evening in which he asked me how he can proceed with a release from Nebraska," said Miles in a statement. "There have been discussions with Andrew and his father about Andrew's place in our program for months and this is his decision. Even though I am extremely disappointed he will be be given a complete release as the logistics are handled this week. We will move on. I am truly excited about our team and next season."

White submitted his name for the NBA draft but withdrew hours before the deadline for underclassmen. The 6-foot-7 wing tried out with the Utah Jazz, Detroit Pistons, Chicago Bulls and Boston Celtics before making his decision.

White, who sat out the 2014-15 season after transferring from Kansas, averaged 16.6 points and 5.9 rebounds per game last season. He has one year of eligibility remaining.
