Paul Goldschmidt hit on hand

MLB, Arizona Diamondbacks, Pittsburgh Pirates

Arizona Diamondbacks All-Star slugger and first baseman Paul Goldschmidt was hit in the left hand by an Ernesto Frieri pitch in the ninth inning, the crowning blow in an ugly finish to a 9-4 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night during which Pittsburgh scored eight runs in the final two innings, including five in the ninth.

Goldschmidt had his hand wrapped after the game. He said he hadn't heard the results of the X-rays. The Arizona Republic reported the X-rays were inconclusive and the team would know more Saturday.

"I've never had any broken bones or fractures or anything like that," Goldschmidt told the Republic. "It felt OK. Obviously there's still some pain because he hit it pretty good. He throws hard."

While teammate Miguel Montero called the incident "shady," Goldschmidt didn't think Frieri was trying to hit him.

"Guys have to try and get outs. What do you want them to do? Just throw it down the middle? They pitch inside as a team. We do it too. We want our pitchers to be able to pitch inside. You don't want to see anyone get hurt but sometimes it may or may not happen," he said.

After the game was over, the Diamondbacks, upset that Goldschmidt had been hit, got into an argument with catcher Russell Martin about it. The dugouts emptied but no one did more than talk.

"I don't think anybody on their side was happy that Goldschmidt got hit," Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle said. "It wasn't any intent on Ernesto's part. ... Nobody wants to hit a guy in that situation."
