Byron Buxton likely out for season

Minnesota Twins minor leaguer Byron Buxton, one of the top prospects in baseball, will likely miss the rest of the season after suffering a concussion during a scary outfield collison, general manager Terry Ryan told reporters Monday.

Buxton flew to Fort Myers, Florida, to begin his recovery after colliding with teammate Mike Kvasnicka during his first game at Double-A New Britain.

Ryan said Buxton had concussion-like symptoms -- a stiff neck and some headaches -- but nothing more serious.

"We're all fortunate it ended up the way it ended up," Ryan said. "We've seen collisions in our day, but that one ranked right up there."

Buxton is ranked as the No. 2 overall prospect by ESPN's Keith Law.

Ryan told reporters that Buxton could play in the Arizona Fall League in October if he makes progress.

"Only if he's ready," Ryan said. "I don't want to get premature on how he'll recover and feel two weeks from now. First things first, we need to go through the major league protocol for concussion symptoms. But he's in Fort Myers, which is convenient, so we can ramp him up there. The fall league starts Oct. 7, so it makes some sense that might be a good progression."
