CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Indians have placed catcher Yan Gomes on the seven-day concussion disabled list.
Gomes, hit on the mask Thursday after a pitch deflected off Minnesota's Kurt Suzuki, was still experiencing symptoms after taking part in some light activity Friday and Saturday.
With Gomes on the DL, the Indians on Saturday acquired catcher Chris Gimenez from the Texas Rangers for future considerations.
Gimenez batted .262 in 34 games with the Rangers before being designated for assignment on Aug. 7. He was assigned to Triple-A Round Rock after being taken off the Rangers' roster.
The 31-year-old Gimenez was drafted by Cleveland in 2004 and spent parts of the 2009 and 2010 seasons with the Indians. He has a career .215 average, and has also played with Seattle and Tampa Bay.
Indians manager Terry Francona said Saturday the team is taking a cautious approach and doesn't want to rush Gomes back into action.
Roberto Perez started at catcher Saturday night against Houston for the second straight game, with Gimenez expected to join the Indians on Sunday. Francona said first baseman Carlos Santana could play a few innings behind the plate if necessary.
Gomes is batting .284 with 17 homers and 53 RBIs.
The Indians entered play Saturday night 5½ games back in the AL wild-card standings.
