Everth Cabrera signed by Orioles

SARASOTA, Fla. -- The Baltimore Orioles have signed former All-Star infielder Everth Cabrera to a one-year contract.

Baltimore negotiated a $2.4 million, one-year contract with $600,000 in incentives for the 28-year-old, who was suspended for 50 games in 2013 after Major League Baseball's investigation of the Biogenesis of America clinic.

Cabrera was an All-Star in 2013 when he played for the San Diego Padres. He led the NL with 44 steals in 2012.

The switch-hitter could compete for a utility job with Ryan Flaherty and non-roster infielder Jayson Nix.

To make room for Cabrera on the 40-man roster, the Orioles designated outfielder Alex Hassan for assignment.
