A Houston Astros affiliate's "Back to the Future" promotion quickly has taken a seat in the past.
On Tuesday, the Pacific Coast League's Fresno Grizzlies, confident in their parent club's future, announced they would give fans 2017 World Series championship rings as part of a "Back to the Future" giveaway slated for August.
Less than 24 hours later, the team reversed course, canceling the promotion.
"We met internally and have decided to replace the 2017 Houston Astros World Championship Ring with a more Fresno-centric giveaway, which more aligns with our marketing plans for 2015 and beyond," Derek Franks, general manager of the Grizzlies said, according to the Houston Chronicle. "We do not want a Fresno Grizzlies giveaway to be perceived as a jinx for our Major League affiliate."
The Astros said they appreciated the first-year affiliate's gesture.
"We appreciate that our affiliate is as optimistic as our fans are about the future of the Astros," team president Reid Ryan said, according to the Chronicle. "The Grizzlies will see some of the Astros' top talent coming through Chukchansi Park, and we wish their whole team the best of luck in the upcoming 2015 season."
