John Axford's son in stable condition

MLB, Colorado Rockies

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The 2-year-old son of Colorado Rockies pitcher John Axford is in stable condition a week after getting bitten twice by a rattlesnake.

Axford, who returned to pitch a bullpen session on Tuesday, had not been with the Rockies since his son went to the hospital for anti-venom treatment last Wednesday. A second round of treatment was needed a few days later due to the excessive amount of venom found.

"Things got very bad, very quickly," Axford told the Denver Post on Tuesday. "It looked like a fairly normal snake bite. But things took a turn for the worse. There was a lot of pain. A lot of screaming."

Doctors have likely saved the foot, though Jameson Axford could still face losing a toe or two, Rockies officials said.

"We can't do anything, except give him hugs and kisses -- and pancakes sometimes," Axford told the Post.

John Axford says he is grateful for the support he's received, but he isn't sure when he'll be able to return to the team full-time. He signed a one-year, $2.6 million deal during the offseason.

"The last thing I want to do is think about baseball," Axford said. "We're not sure what is happening. We're trying to take things step by step."
