Justin Verlander to throw simulated game Tuesday

MLB, Detroit Tigers

Justin Verlander will throw a simulated game Tuesday, the next step in his return to the Detroit Tigers.

The Tigers scheduled the simulated game for Verlander, who has not pitched this season due to a triceps strain, after the right-hander threw a successful bullpen session Thursday.

Verlander told reporters Friday that he felt good after the extended session of about 45 pitches.

"I'm excited," said Verlander, who will travel with the Tigers to Oakland on Tuesday to throw the simulated game.

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said Verlander could begin a minor-league rehabilitation assignment if he has no setbacks during the simulated game.

"We'll cross that bridge when we get there," Ausmus told reporters, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Verlander previously attempted to throw a simulated game on April 14, but the outing was cut short after the former MVP reported arm fatigue.
