ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Oakland Athletics right-hander Sonny Gray left his start early because of a bruised right ankle.
Gray was replaced by Dan Otero after the fifth inning in Sunday's 7-2 victory against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Gray got the win, improving to 5-2, with his five scoreless innings in which he allowed four hits.
He was hit in the lower leg by James Loney's grounder in the fourth inning, but remained in the game after being looked at by a team trainer.
"It feels OK ... not great,'' Gray said. "Probably just a couple days of treatment and stuff, and more than likely be ready to go.''
Oakland manager Bob Melvin doesn't expect Gray to miss a start. X-rays were negative.
Gray had lost his previous two starts.
"After the fourth inning it got really, really tight and stiff,'' Gray said. "I just wasn't able to push off.''
Tampa Bay outfielder Steven Souza Jr. left in the third because of a sprained left wrist, which occurred while swinging at a Gray pitch.
