Sonny Gray back with A's after hospitalization; next start unknown

Right-hander Sonny Gray rejoined the Oakland Athletics after being hospitalized for two days while being treated for gastritis that was caused by salmonella.

"I finally woke up this morning feeling somewhat normal and able to start to eat solid foods again, which is nice," Gray said, according to MLB.com. "I'm just really glad to be back here, for sure."

The team was hoping Gray would be able to pitch Sunday against the Seattle Mariners, but manager Bob Melvin said there's a "good chance" fill-in Chris Bassitt will start in Gray's place in the series finale.

"Once we determine how he's feeling, then we'll get him off a mound and see where we go from here, but no determination on a day to pitch yet," Melvin said about Gray's return after Thursday's 4-0 win over the Mariners, according to MLB.com.

The condition involved inflammation in the lining of the stomach, and Gray experienced a fever as high as 103 degrees. Oakland team physician Dr. Allan Pont said of all the cases of severe gastritis he's seen in 32 years with the A's, this was the first requiring a hospital visit.

Gray is second in the AL with a 2.09 ERA and is 9-3 for the last-place A's. He was scratched from his scheduled start on Tuesday night because of the ailment.
