Braves activate Freddie Freeman

MLB, Atlanta Braves

ST. LOUIS -- The Atlanta Braves have activated first baseman Freddie Freeman from the 15-day disabled list, but he was not in the starting lineup against the Cardinals because he was traveling and didn't land in St. Louis until close to game time.

He ultimately entered the game in the seventh inning as a pinch hitter, flying out in his only at-bat of Atlanta's 1-0 loss before taking over at first base for Chris Johnson.

Freeman was placed on the DL on June 23, retroactive to June 15, with a right wrist contusion. He played in one rehab game, going 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs, for the Braves' Gulf Coast affiliate.

The Braves scored 83 runs in the 30 games Freeman missed, an average of 2.8 per game, and went 13-17 in his absence.

Freeman is batting .298 with 12 homers and 41 RBIs this season.

Atlanta also recalled infielder Daniel Castro and outfielder Adonis Garcia from Triple-A Gwinnett. It's the second call-up this season for both players.

Castro hit a combined .300 in 89 games at Double-A Mississippi and Gwinnett. Garcia batted .284 for Gwinnett.
