Denard Span to return to DL with hip inflammation

Denard Span's return from back spasms, which sidelined him for 40 games, has come to an abrupt end.

Span was not in the lineup for the Washington Nationals' 4-2 win over the San Diego Padres on Thursday, and after the game, manager Matt Williams said that while the absence was not related to his back, Span would be returning to the disabled list with left hip inflammation. A corresponding move will be announced Friday.

When asked if Span is done for the season, Williams responded: "It's unclear now. I would imagine it's going to very tough for him to get back."

Thursday's win proved to be costly for Washington. Yunel Escobar left with a right hand contusion in the sixth, an inning after getting hit on the right wrist with the bases loaded. He was down for a short period of time and finished the inning before leaving.

Center fielder Michael Taylor left with a right knee contusion after hitting the wall hard in the seventh inning on Melvin Upton Jr.'s two-out triple. Taylor tore a piece of the wall padding trying to make a leaping catch.

"I don't know if I've ever seen anything like (the injuries of the season)," Williams said. "But it is what it is. There's not much you can do about it."

Both Escobar and Taylor are day-to-day, and Williams said they will see how both feel on Friday. Escobar got hit by starter Andrew Cashner with the bases loaded in the fifth and drove in a run on the play before leaving an inning later.
