Nationals' Denard Span to miss rest of season after hip surgery

WASHINGTON -- Nationals center fielder Denard Span will have hip surgery and miss the rest of the season, manager Matt Williams said Friday.

The team placed Span on the 15-day disabled list Friday with left hip inflammation. He is scheduled to undergo surgery on Tuesday, Williams said.

Span, 31, has already missed 52 games in two stints on the disabled list with back ailments.

He had just returned from the DL to play for Washington on Tuesday and Wednesday night but was held out Thursday. After the game, manager Matt Williams said Span's back issues had resurfaced and could end his season.

In 61 games, Span is batting .301 with five home runs and 22 RBIs. He'll be a free agent at the end of the season.

Washington recalled outfielder Matt den Dekker from Triple-A Syracuse.
