Twins call up 5 from Triple-A, including Danny Santana, Kennys Vargas

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Twins have added five players from Triple-A Rochester for September: shortstop Danny Santana, first baseman Kennys Vargas, catcher Eric Fryer and right-handed relievers A.J. Achter and Michael Tonkin.

The moves were made Tuesday, the first day teams could expand their active rosters past the 25-man limit.

Each player has been with the Twins already this year. Santana and Vargas were regulars for much of the first half of the season before being sent down. With Eduardo Escobar settled in at shortstop, Miguel Sano entrenched as the designated hitter and Joe Mauer at first base, neither Santana nor Vargas will play much down the stretch.

Top pitching prospect Jose Berrios was not in the first wave of promotions. The right-hander has thrown 161-plus innings in the minors.
